Trailer analysis:
From watching trailers as opposed to open title sequences, we have recognised the difference in the shots. In trailers, the shots are randomised throughout and are a lot shorter than the ones in an opening title sequence. Also in an opening title sequence the shots are in chronological order, however in trailers the shots are picked out from the whole film to give the audience an insight. (TS,MP)
Paranormal Activity 1 (2007):
In the first 'Paranormal Activity' trailer, there are a variety of different shots, some in the day and others at night. Unusually all of the shots are set in the same location, which is usually unseen in trailers. This trailer affective and is only uses. The trailer doesn't give away too much of the film, but just enough to engage the audience, making them want to see more. The trailer is effective because it is very realistic, when it first came out it fooled a lot of people, thinking that it was a real documentary. This could have happened because the actor is seemed to film the whole storyline himself, with a handheld camera. This would be an easy film to pay homage to as all the shots are filmed handheld so don't have any complex technology. (TS,MP)
The Last Exorcism (2010):
In the 'Last Exorcism' trailer there is a variety of different locations used, they use a barn, a house, a car and many others. The shots are very short which is common in trailers and throughout they have titles. The trailer is heavily edited as there are different colours used such as light, dark and red. The soundtrack starts slow and then builds up as the trailer goes on, this expresses the build up in the actual film. They have included various shots that will unsettle the audience because they are seen as inhuman, such as the actress, breaking the neck and her back. However us as media students have now learnt how this is done on a filmset. (TS,MP)
The Pact (2012):
The trailer for The Pact is very tense right from the start. From the darkness, the ripped wallpaper and the scary setting makes the audience scared for the start. As soon as the child says 'who's that behind you mummy' the plot is revealed. Similarly 'Paranormal Activity', the trailer only included a couple of locations. Also its similar to 'The Last Exorcism' and 'ThePact' trailer as they all used unsettling shots which baffle the audience in how they are done, making them want to watch more. The soundtrack, is a drone throughout, this makes the trailer more tense as you are awaiting for something to happen. (TS,MP)
The Purge (2013):
The trailer shows an average american family who live in this futuristic changed society where all crime is legal for one night. This trailer uses many locations, the main location of the shots are inside a house however there are also a variety of locations such as on the streets, down alleyways and around the neighbourhood. This tailer uses many violent images of crime and the editing suggets that these crimes are in varied locations as the dark camera shots from cctv cameras change in colour each time and there are also shots which seem to be filmed using phones to make it look more realistic. The mid and high angle camera shots of the empty streets show how dangers 'the purge' is as the streets are completely deserted suggeting to the viewers its to dangerous to go outside, this is also shown by the mid shot of the house being locked up. Around a minute into the trailer the soundtrack changes from a quiet relaxing tone to a loud alarm and fast beat banging which indicates to the audience that something horrible is going to happen, the camera shots become more fast paced and varied showing the chaos. The shots of the creepy mask murders are edited to look like they have been filmed by a cctv camera again indicated to the audience that the american family are isolated. at the end of the trailer an american flag is shown with the colour drained out of it and a gospel soundtrack is played in the background.
